Beijing.

Imperial landmarks, living neighbourhoods and a city that rewards a slower look.

Discover
Beijing

Beijing brings China's imperial history into view at the Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven and Summer Palace. Each place reveals a different side of the capital, from palace courtyards to lakeside gardens.

Walk a section of the Great Wall at Mutianyu, then return to the city for a slower look at its hutongs. Around Shichahai, narrow lanes, courtyard homes and daily life give the monumental sights a more human scale.

The imperial city in context

The Forbidden City rewards a selected route through its courts and collections. Pair it with a view from Jingshan or a quieter neighbourhood walk; the palace is too substantial to be a brief stop between distant monuments.

Hutongs, temples & everyday life

Older lanes, courtyards and the Temple of Heaven show different ways in which the city was inhabited and imagined. Respect private residential space. A neighbourhood meal or craft encounter can connect monumental history with present-day Beijing.

The Great Wall beyond the centre

Choose a Wall section for scenery, access and walking ability. This is a dedicated excursion outside the city, not a short transfer after a full palace day. Less restored sections require a different assessment from managed visitor routes.

Yuxian Coloured Paper-Cutting · a cultural connection

Yuxian is in Hebei, outside Beijing. Treat it as a separate overnight extension west of the capital, with time for road travel and its workshops, rather than a Beijing city activity. Allow time in Yuxian for a demonstration of knife-cut designs and applied colour. Compare a finished pattern with the working stages, then choose a simple guided paper exercise suitable for the tools and setting.

Time well spent.

4 days · a balanced first stay

Allow separate palace, neighbourhood, Wall and interest-led days.

5–6 days · art, gardens or history

Add the Summer Palace, a major museum or contemporary art without shortening the core visits.

At the local table

Try more than roast duck: breakfast foods, noodles, seasonal vegetables and local snacks give a broader picture of the city.

Choosing your base

Choose a base around the neighbourhoods you want to walk. Reservations, cross-city traffic, summer heat and winter cold all affect the pace.

Fangshan

Karst scenery and Zhoukoudian’s early-human record connect geology with archaeology beyond central Beijing. The museum provides a useful beginning to the landscape’s long story.

Fangshan Geopark spans southwestern Beijing and adjoining Hebei. Zhoukoudian is a distinct World Heritage property within this wider setting.
