Plateau landscapes, monasteries and journeys that need time to settle into.
International visitors should arrange travel documents before booking transport into Tibet. Requirements depend on nationality, entry status, route and travel dates.
Official guidance: travel permits for foreign nationals and electronic border-area permits. Please ask us to verify the current rules for your trip.
Tibet brings together monasteries, high-altitude lakes and long views across the plateau. Begin in Lhasa with the Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple and Barkhor's pilgrim circuit, leaving time to settle into the altitude.
Longer journeys may reach Yamdrok Lake, Shigatse, Everest or the forested valleys around Nyingchi. Each route needs thoughtful pacing; access, permits and practical arrangements are confirmed for your travel dates.

Find the places and stories that matter to you, then give them the time they deserve.
Lhasa, Shigatse, Shannan, Nyingchi and Ngari offer different landscapes and cultural emphases. The first planning decision is which of these fits your interests and available time, not how many can be joined in one week.
Monasteries are active religious places as well as repositories of art and architecture. A good visit explains what is visible while respecting spaces, ceremonies and people that are not part of a visitor programme.
Begin with a gradual pace and plan substantial road stages carefully. Lower valleys, central plateau cities and far-western pilgrimage routes have very different demands; hotel changes alone do not establish adequate acclimatisation.
Start with Lhasa and one compatible regional extension, allowing time to settle in.
Focus on a particular region, artistic tradition or pilgrimage landscape with sufficient nights.
Food is part of cultural understanding: tea houses, breads and everyday dishes add another dimension to monastery visits. Match meals to personal needs and local availability.
Current entry, permit and itinerary requirements must be checked for each traveller. Choose actual cities and overnight stages from the destination pages below.

Follow Tibetan incense from water-ground wood to a hand-shaped stick. In Nyemo’s Thonpa area, the river, the workshop and the drying racks are all part of the story.
