Pingyao brings the shape of an old Chinese town into focus: a walled centre, courtyard houses and streets once tied to an extensive trading and banking network. It is best explored at walking pace, with time to turn into the quieter lanes.
Outside the town, Shuanglin and Zhenguo temples add another dimension through painted sculpture and historic halls. Combine the town and temples over two days, or use Pingyao as the final chapter of a longer journey through Shanxi’s architectural heritage.
