Discover
Dali

Dali brings together Bai cultural traditions, old-town lanes and the open shore of Erhai. A longer pause here lets you encounter village life as well as the mountain-and-lake panorama.

Pair the Three Pagodas with a walk through Dali’s old town, then make room for the villages around the lake. A tie-dye introduction in Zhoucheng gives pattern and colour a local context. Select one stretch of shore rather than racing around the entire lake.

Spring and autumn are good starting points for planning. Wind and strong sun call for layers and sun protection; summer can be rainy.

The old town beyond the main streets

Dali’s old-town grid is best explored early or through quieter lanes, balancing historic buildings with the reality of a busy visitor town. Look for market life, courtyards and local kitchens; a short guided walk can provide Bai cultural context without turning the whole day into shopping.

Xizhou & Bai architecture

Xizhou makes a useful separate focus for courtyard architecture, agricultural surroundings and local food. Nearby villages can introduce textile traditions when a suitable visit is arranged. Distinguish a craft demonstration from a hands-on workshop, and leave time for the people and processes rather than collecting several brief stops.

Erhai & Cangshan

Erhai’s shoreline and the Cangshan mountain slopes offer contrasting days. Select one stretch of lakeside walking or cycling instead of assuming the entire lake should be circled. Mountain routes depend on weather, operating conditions and fitness; the lake is a good alternative when higher ground is unsuitable.

Time well spent.

2 days · town & villages

Use one day for Dali’s old town and a selected lakeside stretch, another for Xizhou and a village encounter.

3–4 days · add mountain time

Add a suitable Cangshan outing and a quieter day for food or craft interests. Keep accommodation moves to a minimum.

At the local table

Look for grilled rushan milk cheese, Xizhou baba and seasonal Bai dishes. Food experiences work best as a conversation about everyday ingredients, with flavours adapted to your appetite rather than a compulsory tasting list.

Choosing your base

Choose the old-town area for evening walks or a quieter village/lakeside base for a slower stay. A remote lake-view address adds transfer time to old-town and mountain visits.

A geological perspective.

Erhai Lake

Dali–Cangshan

Cangshan’s mountain edge and Erhai’s lower landscape connect rock, water and Bai culture. Mountain paths and a geological museum reveal different sides of Dali.

The geopark covers the Cangshan–Erhai landscape; this tag does not designate the whole of Dali city as a World Heritage site.
