Datong.

Buddhist sculpture, grand temple halls and a gateway to Shanxi’s ancient buildings.

Discover
Datong

Datong is a compelling introduction to northern China’s Buddhist art and architecture. The Yungang Grottoes reveal monumental sculpture carved into sandstone, while Huayan Temple brings attention back to the scale and detail of timber halls.

Extend beyond the city to the Hanging Temple and Yingxian Wooden Pagoda, or continue south on a longer Shanxi architecture journey. The interest lies in looking closely: the structure of a hall, the expression of a sculpture and the way buildings occupy their landscape.

Yungang: sculpture on a monumental scale

Yungang’s caves reveal the ambitions of Northern Wei patrons and changing Buddhist imagery. Give both the large figures and the more intricate interiors time; the sequence of caves matters more than a single famous photograph.

Huayan, Shanhua & the old city

These temples offer a different encounter with architecture and sculpture inside Datong. Distinguish the surviving historic buildings from reconstructed sections of the surrounding cityscape.

Yingxian & Hunyuan

The wooden pagoda at Yingxian and the Hanging Temple near Hunyuan are separate outlying sites. They can form a road stage, but need time for transfers and currently permitted access; viewing a pagoda does not promise entry to all its storeys.

Time well spent.

2 days · caves & city

Separate Yungang from the principal urban temples.

3 days · timber & cliff architecture

Add a planned excursion through Yingxian or Hunyuan, or continue south through Shanxi.

At the local table

Knife-cut noodles and northern-Shanxi dishes provide a local food thread between art and architecture visits.

Choosing your base

Stay centrally for evening walks; the caves and outlying monuments need road transfers. Winter conditions can be severe.
