Mount Lu.

Misty ridgelines above Jiujiang, with poetry, mountain retreats and layered spiritual history.

Discover
Mount Lu

Mount Lu rises beside Poyang Lake and the Yangtze, a mountain landscape whose clouds, valleys and waterfalls have held the imagination of poets for centuries. Its cultural story includes Buddhist and Daoist sites, learning traditions and later summer villas.

Spend time on the plateau and choose walks for the weather: the shifting views matter as much as any single viewpoint. A longer stay lets you explore Guling, heritage architecture and quieter mountain paths without treating Lushan as a hurried detour.

Guling & the mountain’s modern history

Guling’s villas and mountain streets introduce a history of summer retreats alongside the older sacred landscape. A good walk distinguishes periods and architectural influences instead of treating all buildings as one timeless mountain village.

Poetry, cliffs & waterfalls

Lu Shan’s literary fame gives context to its scenery, but celebrated poems do not map neatly onto every modern viewpoint. Choose a route for walking ability, weather and the actual waterfall conditions.

Donglin Temple below the mountain

Donglin’s Pure Land Buddhist association is a separate cultural focus at the foot of the mountain. It is not simply another stop beside Guling, and deserves its own transfer and visit.

Time well spent.

2 days · mountain history & scenery

Stay around the chosen mountain base and combine a villa walk with a scenic route.

3 days · add Buddhist context

Include Donglin as a separate stage rather than rushing down and back.

At the local table

Mountain tea and Jiangxi cooking provide local context; plan for spicy dishes and more limited choices at isolated sites.

Choosing your base

Distinguish the mountain, Jiujiang and temple-area bases. Fog and winding roads can affect travel time.

Donglin Temple.

At the foot of Mount Lu, Donglin Temple is closely associated with Huiyuan (334–416) and the early history of Pure Land devotion in China. It is an active religious place as well as an important chapter in the mountain’s cultural history.

A visit works best as its own part of a Mount Lu stay, with time for the temple’s setting and practice today. Ask us to combine it with a wider Jiangxi Buddhist or landscape journey.

For a separate Chan chapter in Jiangxi, explore Yunju Shan and Zhenru Temple in Yongxiu. Its farming tradition and Xuyun’s later life complement Donglin’s Pure Land story, with a dedicated transfer between the two areas.

A geological perspective.

Mount Lu

Lushan

Waterfalls and a raised mountain landscape offer a geological perspective on a place also known for poetry, learning and religious life. Look beyond one celebrated view.

The geopark overlaps the Lushan landscape but is separately recognised from Lushan National Park’s cultural World Heritage inscription.
