A city in three dimensions
Hills, stairs, bridges and rivers shape daily movement. A neighbourhood walk reveals how this terrain shapes the city; a short distance on a flat map can involve considerable climbing.
Steep streets, rivers meeting and a striking cityscape after dark.
Set between the Yangtze and Jialing rivers, Chongqing rises in layers of bridges, steep streets and illuminated riverfronts. Hongyadong and the busy Jiefangbei district show two sides of its urban energy.
Ride the metro past the famous Liziba station, where the train passes through a building, or wander the older lanes of Ciqikou. Beyond the city, Wulong's Three Natural Bridges open up a very different landscape of limestone gorges and natural arches.
Dazu Rock Carvings offer a different cultural day beyond the urban skyline. At Baodingshan, Buddhist, Daoist and Confucian subjects meet everyday life in a remarkable sequence of stone narratives. Start with this main site; a deeper visit can add Beishan with a separate transfer, rather than rushing everyone through both.

Chaotianmen and the confluence introduce the city’s geography, while older streets and selected museums give context to trade, wartime history and migration. Hongyadong is a lively visitor district, best understood as part of the contemporary city.
Dazu Rock Carvings offers a major cultural excursion, with Baodingshan as the core and Beishan for deeper interest. Wulong’s karst landscapes are another substantial trip; they belong on separate days or overnight extensions.
Allow a full city introduction, another local-interest day and a dedicated Dazu outing.
Extend to Wulong with realistic transport rather than rushing both outlying areas.
Hotpot, xiaomian noodles and home-style dishes offer several ways to explore local flavour. Non-spicy preferences need deliberate choices.
Choose a base with convenient access, not only a dramatic view. Steps, lifts and road transfers affect practical mobility.

Dazu’s carved narratives bring Buddhist teaching, Daoist ideas, Confucian family ethics and everyday life into the same cultural landscape. The UNESCO World Heritage property includes several separate carving clusters; Baodingshan is the focus of our introductory day.
Explore the gilded Thousand-armed Guanyin, the reclining Buddha and the stories around them at an unhurried pace. Beishan offers a further chapter for visitors who want more sculpture, but it needs a separate road transfer. We discuss that addition before planning the day rather than treating both sites as compulsory.
