Zhongnan Mountains.

Wooded Qinling foothills, Buddhist monasteries and Daoist traditions, just beyond Xi’an.

Zhongnan Mountains

South of Xi’an, the Zhongnan Mountains form part of the Qinling landscape: wooded slopes, narrow valleys and temples set between mountain and plain. For centuries, this landscape has drawn Buddhist and Daoist practitioners, poets and people seeking a quieter way of life.

At Jingye Temple, the story is Buddhist discipline: the monastery is associated with the Tang monk Daoxuan and the Nanshan Vinaya tradition. Further west, Louguantai belongs to a different spiritual world, with Daoist traditions connecting the site to Laozi and the teaching of the Daodejing. These are distinct places and traditions, best explored with time between them.

Bill Porter’s Road to Heaven, known in Chinese as Konggu Youlan, offers a thoughtful introduction to the region’s hermit culture. A visit here can bring together landscape, Chinese poetry and living religious traditions, without treating private hermit dwellings as visitor attractions.

Choose one temple area for a day from Xi’an, or allow two days for Buddhist and Daoist perspectives. Spring and autumn are appealing starting points; bring layers, shoes with good grip and rain protection. Mountain paths and opening arrangements are checked for your dates.

A mountain tradition of withdrawal

Zhongnan is associated with reclusion, poetry and religious cultivation. These ideas can shape a thoughtful visit, but private hermit dwellings are not visitor attractions and access to practitioners should never be assumed.

Buddhist & Daoist connections

Temple and sacred-site choices can explore different traditions across the broader mountain region. A visit to selected temples reveals individual histories within this varied sacred landscape.

Landscape close to Xi’an

Foothill walks and village settings provide a contrast to the city. The wider range is extensive, so the specific valley, transport and walking route matter more than the general name Zhongnan.

Time well spent.

1 day · a focused foothill visit

Choose one accessible cultural site and a suitable walk from Xi’an.

2–3 days · a quieter stay

Use a carefully selected base for more time outdoors and any confirmed hosted experience.

At the local table

Simple Shaanxi meals and seasonal produce fit a foothill stay. Confirm meal provision at smaller rural accommodation.

Choosing your base

Weather, trail condition and the exact valley determine the route. A cultural introduction does not imply access to secluded religious practice.

Meet China through Daoist culture.

Louguantai: connect the places here with Laozi, Zhuangzi and the wider world of Daoist thought, faith and living traditions.

Qinling Zhongnanshan

The Qinling mountain belt marks a major natural divide. Walks through the Zhongnan setting connect geological change, contrasting habitats and a long contemplative tradition.

The geopark comprises defined sectors of the Qinling region. A visit to a nearby monastery does not mean the entire wider mountain range has the same designation.
