Beijing brings imperial landmarks and the Great Wall; Xi'an adds the Terracotta Army; Shanghai closes the journey with waterfront views and neighbourhood life. Choose the shorter route for these three cities.

With more time, include Zhangjiajie's sandstone peaks for a striking change of scenery. The 9-day route is a brisk introduction; the 12-day version allows a slower look at more places along the way.
