Qingzhou.

Buddhist sculpture, old-city lanes and a mountain landscape in Shandong.

Discover
Qingzhou

Qingzhou rewards a closer look. At Qingzhou Museum, “The Qingzhou Smile” brings visitors face to face with Buddhist sculptures unearthed at the Longxing Temple site. Among its celebrated Northern Qi works, restrained smiles, fine robes that follow the body and traces of colour and gilding make stone feel quietly alive.

More than 400 sculptures were unearthed at Longxing Temple in 1996, dating from the Northern Wei through the Northern Song. The museum’s celebrated Northern Qi works are part of this remarkable discovery. Allow around three hours for the museum, with the sculpture exhibition as your focus.

Continue through Qingzhou Ancient City and Ouyuan Street, adding Ouyuan Garden when it is open. A second day can bring Yunmen Mountain’s inscriptions and views into the story; travellers who prefer fewer steps can choose the garden and a slower old-city walk instead. Museum reservations and site opening arrangements are checked with official sources before travel.

The Qingzhou Smile

The museum’s Longxing Temple sculpture display is the principal cultural focus. Look for restrained smiles, close-fitting robes and surviving colour. The 1996 discovery contained more than 400 sculptures across several periods, not exclusively Northern Qi and not all necessarily on display.

Old-city lanes & Ouyuan

The older city and Ouyuan Street offer a gentler afternoon after concentrated museum looking. Add Ouyuan itself if open and suited to your interests, leaving time for smaller streets rather than only the busiest commercial stretch.

Yunmen Mountain

Yunmen Mountain brings a landscape and inscription-focused extension. Walking and steps are part of the choice; a slower garden-and-city day is a useful alternative for visitors who prefer not to climb.

Weifang Kite-Making · a cultural connection

Kite-making is centred in Weifang and Yangjiabu. Qingzhou, within the wider Weifang prefecture, is a useful cultural pairing; arrange a separate transfer to the kite-making area. Look at the bamboo frame and painted surface before choosing a simple kite-making introduction. Flying is a separate outdoor activity shaped by wind, space and weather; it should be planned alongside the craft visit.

Time well spent.
