Nanjing.

Ming heritage, wooded tomb avenues and evenings beside the Qinhuai River.

Discover
Nanjing

Nanjing’s history is written into its city walls, temple districts and leafy hills. A former imperial capital beside the Yangtze, it rewards travellers who want to connect grand monuments with the rhythm of a modern Chinese city.

Walk a section of the Ming city wall, spend time along the Qinhuai River and head to Purple Mountain for the Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum. Two days give the wooded imperial landscape its own space, rather than rushing through it between city stops.

Find the places and stories that matter to you, then give them the time they deserve.

Capital city, several histories

The Ming city wall and Zhonghua Gate reveal one period of capital building; the Presidential Palace introduces a much later political history. Choose a theme or spread these visits across days so that the historical contexts remain clear.

Purple Mountain

The Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum, Ming Xiaoling and surrounding woodland occupy a large area. Select a coherent route with manageable walking; this is not one compact attraction beside the city centre.

Museums, neighbourhoods & remembrance

Nanjing Museum offers depth in art and regional history, while Qinhuai and older lanes reveal a more social city. The Memorial Hall of the Victims in Nanjing Massacre deserves a separate, reflective visit rather than being squeezed into an entertainment circuit.

Time well spent.

3 days · a layered introduction

Allow a city-history day, a Purple Mountain day and a museum or neighbourhood day.

4 days · follow an interest

Add deeper museum time, remembrance or a Jiangnan craft connection.

At the local table

Salted duck, duck-blood vermicelli soup and seasonal snacks offer varied introductions. Discuss ingredients rather than assuming every celebrated dish suits everyone.

Choosing your base

Central districts simplify evening walks and dining. Keep major reservations and the mountain’s dispersed entrances in the route plan.
