Shaoxing brings writing and landscape together: canals threaded through an old city, the memory of Wang Xizhi at Orchid Pavilion, and the waterways that led generations of travellers deeper into eastern Zhejiang.

Start at Orchid Pavilion to understand why a gathering of writers became one of China’s best-known calligraphy stories. The East Lake and old waterways make a complementary landscape day. The historical poetry road was a network of river and overland passages, not a modern walking trail with a single fixed itinerary.

Canals & bridges

Shaoxing’s waterways are best explored through a walk that links quieter lanes with stone bridges. A short boat ride can change the perspective, but it should complement rather than replace time on foot.

Lu Xun & the city of writers

Lu Xun’s home-area museums bring a major modern writer into the streets of his childhood. Shen Garden offers a different literary association through Lu You; keep the people and periods distinct.

Orchid Pavilion & calligraphy

Lanting is associated with Wang Xizhi and a celebrated gathering of literati. It lies beyond the central lanes and works best as a considered excursion, with the calligraphic tradition explained before the visit.
