Kangding and Xinduqiao are gateways to longer mountain drives, while routes farther south can reach Litang and Yading's alpine scenery. Distances, altitude and changing weather are part of the experience, so the route is best paced with care.

Passes, weather and long drives are fundamental to the experience. A gradual approach and comfortable overnight stages matter more than maximising the number of famous names on the route.
