Dunhuang Quzi Opera

Beyond the cave paintings, Dunhuang has its own local theatre tradition. Quzi opera brings folk stories to life through regional melodies, dialect and performance.

Local melodies, dialect and storytelling give Dunhuang Quzi its character. It offers a cultural perspective beyond the city's better-known cave paintings and desert landscapes.

A tradition in context.

Dunhuang’s local opera tradition offers a living voice alongside the better-known cave art. Its stage, repertory and performance calendar belong to local cultural life rather than the Mogao visit itself.

Make time to understand.

Add a local musical chapter to time in Dunhuang, with an introduction to the dialect, story and selected scene. Performances follow local programmes; they should be arranged independently of the Mogao Caves reservation.
