Kunqu Opera
A sleeve, a glance, a line of song. Kunqu tells its stories through lyrical music and wonderfully precise movement.
Developed in the Suzhou region, Kunqu brings together singing, recitation, gesture and instrumental music. Understanding a character’s movements and the story behind a short scene opens up an art that rewards close attention.

Kunqu developed around Kunshan and the Jiangnan cultural world. The measured gestures, poetic language and musical phrasing belong together; an introductory excerpt makes a full performance easier to follow.
Make time to understand.
Pair Suzhou’s gardens with an introduction to a Kunqu scene. Learn who the characters are and what a sleeve or gesture expresses before watching; choose a public performance or a separately arranged excerpt around your dates.
Pair the place with a living tradition
These are cultural pairings and possible travel extensions. Recognition of a tradition is separate from inscription of a World Heritage site.
