Yixing Zisha Teapots

In Yixing, specialist tools and local clay shape vessels made for tea. Hand-building reveals how a teapot's body, lid and surface come together.

Working with slabs of clay, makers bring together the body, lid and spout of a vessel. A closer look at the tools and hand-building process reveals the decisions hidden in a finished teapot.

A closer encounter

  • Follow how clay is formed into a vessel designed for tea.
  • Explore a small introductory clay project on an excursion from Wuxi to Yixing.

A tradition in context.

Yixing’s clay teapots are closely connected with tea preparation and an appreciation of material. Slab construction, the join between lid and body and the clay’s surface are worth examining slowly.

Make time to understand.

Compare teapot shapes and the fit of lid, body and spout before watching hand-building. A small clay exercise can introduce the skills; firing and the delivery of a finished vessel are separate arrangements.
